Home of the famous Victorian street Kirkgate, this museum has pre-visit guides written for visitors with sensory needs and ear defenders to borrow. Many staff have had autism inclusive training, and weekdays after 3pm are usually calmer.
What they offer
- Quiet or relaxed timesSuggested quieter times are weekdays after 3pm, term time and Sundays, though not guaranteed.
- Sensory mapStandard and detailed pre-visit guides designed for visitors with sensory difficulties; galleries are dim and Kirkgate has a brief flashing lightning effect.
- Ear defenders or sensory kitTwo pairs of adjustable ear defenders and a sensory basket on Kirkgate to borrow, first come first served.
- Staff trainingMany staff have completed training to become autism inclusive.
- Quieter times to visitBusy with school groups and with families in the school holidays; reception can be noisy.
